Natural Gas Vehicle Advantages

Natural gas is the greenest and lowest-cost transportation fuel available today. Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs) also provide additional life cycle savings in the form of dramatically reduced maintenance costs and longer vehicle lifespans. And on top of the direct creation of new jobs, NGVs help fuel the economy indirectly by “freeing up” more funds for business growth, travel, recreation, and numerous other types of economic stimulus.

Learn more about the “end-use” and “big-picture” advantages of Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs) below. Or, click here for a cheat sheet of NGV stats.

  • Natural gas can cost up to 50% less than gasoline or diesel at the pump
  • Because natural gas burns cleaner, it helps keep a vehicle in optimal shape, which means significantly reduced maintenance costs, a longer vehicle lifespan, and other forms of life-cycle savings
  • Possible tax (and other) incentives can help offset the initial cost of commercial and residential NGVs

  • Natural gas is far cleaner than traditional gasoline or diesel fuel, reducing carbon dioxide by up to 30% and toxic emissions by up to 90%
  • Replacing one older diesel bus with a natural gas bus is equivalent to taking 21 cars off the road
  • The natural gas-powered Honda Civic GX is recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency as the cleanest commercially available, internal-combustion vehicle on earth

  • In the event of an accident, traditional gasoline pools on the ground creating a safety hazard. Natural gas, on the other hand, dissipates into the air almost instantly
  • NGVs also have stronger fuel storage cylinders than traditional vehicles, making them less likely to rupture in the case on an accident. Plus, “sealed fuel systems” further prevent spills or evaporative losses
  • The safety standards of NGVs have been proven to withstand the most stringent federal crash testing

  • Home fueling appliances allow owners to fuel their NGVs from the comfort of their garage
  • On-site commercial NGV fueling stations use existing utility pipelines, are modular and can be quickly constructed
  • There are currently around 1,000 NGV fueling stations in the US (with roughly 500 open to the public)—30 of which are in Florida
  • Drivers can choose bi-fuel vehicles, which have the ability to run on natural gas, as well traditional gasoline/diesel
  • NGVs are extremely quiet, with up to a 90% lower db level than diesel vehicles

US & Florida-Friendly

  • Since 97% of America’s natural gas is produced in North America, every gallon of natural gas used in a vehicle equals one less gallon of petroleum that needs to be imported
  • Using natural gas as an alternative fuel can help reduce the billions the US spends on foreign oil every week (not to mention, Florida’s $4 billion-a-month tab)
  • Every new NGV fueling station creates 45 new jobs within a 5-mile radius
  • Every 1% increase in natural gas production can create 35,000 jobs
less petroleum to be imported
